About Iain

Like most the pieces in our collection, the story of how we got into the art business is quite unique!

At 15 I originally trained in horticulture in Dobbies, then on to West of Scotland Agricultural College. At 21 after working in the industry for a few years I began selling peat and fertiliser directly to customers by doing leaflet drops. This was the beginning of my entrepreneurial journey!

Following on from the success of this I opened a small, one window garden shop in The Cowcaddens Glasgow, then moved to a bigger shop on Buchannan Street.

In addition, Alex Mair (who I trained under) soon retired and I took over his Garden Shop on West George Street, next to Queen Street Station. I also opened a flower shop in Dundee Street, Glasgow and took over a small garden centre in Bearsden, expanding it considerably.

With the market changing, I let my garden shop in West George Street to an Art Gallery, which was mostly selling prints. Unfortunately, that gallery went into receivership and rather than simply let it fail, I took it on board along with the two members of staff who had been made redundant.

The unexpected start of a new career!

As you can imagine, moving from horticulture to art had an incredible learning curve, but one that I fell in love with. I opened a small unit in Princess Square for a year then moved into 166 Hope Street Glasgow in 2014, where we still are today.

The gallery is in a super corner position, across two floors with six large windows that are perfect for displaying our original paintings of which we have around 200 at any one time.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes along the way, the kind you can only make from going all-in when you find a passion for something – but I wouldn’t regret a single moment.
